Prof. Carel le Roux

Prof. Carel le Roux, MD, PhD, serves as Head of Pathology and Professor of Chemical Pathology at the University College Dublin. He leads a prominent research group that has produced pivotal studies on appetite regulation and the metabolic effects of bariatric surgery on diabetes. His research, which focus on gut-brain communication, gut hormones, bile acids, and food preferences, is aimed at advancing treatments for obesity and diabetes.

The collaboration between our research groups dates back over a decade, initially forged through the role of Prof. le Roux as the PhD supervisor of Prof. Bueter at the Imperial College London. While the expertise of Prof. le Roux lies in endocrinology, the focus of our group is primarily surgical. This synergy enables us to integrate cutting-edge knowledge from both disciplines, driving forward research that not only advances scientific understanding but also has the potential to transform the clinical approach to obesity treatment.

Prof. le Roux also contributes his scientific expertise at the annual research retreats organized by Prof. Bueter, which foster collaboration within our international research network and facilitate the exchange of ideas across disciplines.

Currently, our drinkometer device is used at the St. Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin, where it is being utilized by Prof. le Roux to investigate the effects of semaglutide and liraglutide on the microstructural parameters of ingestive behavior.
