Prof. Dr. med. Dr. phil. Marco Bueter

Prof. Dr. med. Dr. phil. Marco Bueter is a prominent Bariatric Surgeon and Clinical Researcher at the University Hospital Zurich, specialising in the metabolic and dietary changes following bariatric surgery, particularly Roux-enY gastric Bypass (RYGB). His research seeks to understand why patients alter their food intake and preferences post-surgery, aiming to improve treatment outcomes.

Prof. Dr. med. Dr. phil. Bueter holds a PhD from Imperial College London and has advanced credentials in visceral surgery, including Specialist Visceral Surgery. Currently, he is the Chief Physician and Clinic Manager at Männendorf Hospital, managing general and visceral surgery with emphasis on minimally invasive techniques, while also serving as a Senior Physician and head of Center for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery at University Hospital Zurich.

Prof. Dr. med. Dr. phil. Bueter has earned several honors, including the Dr. Stierlin Prize in 2020 for his research on global benchmarks in bariatric surgery and a presidency of the Swiss Society for the Study of Morbid Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (SMOB) in 2021. In 2024, he became Head of UEMS Task Force of IFSO-EC (European Chapter of International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disoders).

Prof. Dr. med. Dr. phil. Bueter leads a research team focuses team focused on direct measurements of food selection and intakes behaviour after RYGB. His innovative work includes developing the drinkometer, a device for analysing food intake behaviour, and validating a photograpohic food recognition app to imporve dietary assessments in bariatric patients. His ongoing research explores how RYGB affects food preferences, contributing valuable insights to the field.
