Scientific Report

The Drinkometer Project (Behavioral mechanisms underlying changes in food selection and intake in humans after Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass), initiated by Prof. Marco Bueter in 2018 and concluded in 2023, explored behavioral mechanisms behind changes in food intake following Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB). By using a newly developed device, the drinkometer, this project investigated the microstructure of drinking behavior in patients undergoing RYGB surgery using innovative tools like the Drinkometer and Pumpometer. This device provides unique insights into liquid meal consumption, revealing key patterns in ingestive behavior that relate to hunger, satiety, and obesity.

Key findings include:
  • A reduction in meal size and burst size after RYGB.
  • Insights into how postoperative ingestive behavior changes correlate with weight loss.
  • Development of refined methodologies to assess microstructural eating patterns.
This research emphasized the role of microstructure of ingestive behaviour in understanding obesity and offers potential for personalized postoperative care. With numerous peer-reviewed publications and international collaborations, the project has established a foundation for advancing obesity research and bariatric surgery outcomes.
The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Zurich with BASEC-Nr. 2017-00756.
The study is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov with ID NCT04933305 (ClinicalTrials.gov).
