Our Research

Our research group is dedicated to advancing the understanding of obesity's etiology by exploring the physiological and behavioural effects of metabolic bariatric surgery on patients. We adopt a transdisciplinary approach that integrates expertise from surgery, physiology, endocrinology, behavioural science, genetics, microbiology, medical technology, and patient ethics. This comprehensive strategy is further enhanced through collaborations with international experts, thereby expanding our access to resources and specialised knowledge beyond our local capabilities.

Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. med Dr. phil. Marco Bueter, Clinic Director and Head of Surgery at the Hospital Männendorf, our group has built a strong foundation in both clinical excellence and scientific innovation. Between 2012 and 2020, Prof. Bueter established the Bariatric Program within the Department of Visceral Surgery and Transplantation at the University Hospital Zurich, balancing clinical responsabilities with research work. During this period, the group fostered a dynamic academic environment by mentoring four PhD students, two post-doctoral researchers, and two qualifications for a teaching career in higher education (Habilitation).

Even after transitioning his primary clinical duties to Hospital Männendorf, Prof. Bueter remains deeply involved in the scientific supervision of the research group through a partnership with the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetology, and Clinical Nutrition at the University Hospital Zurich.

Our collective efforts continue to drive forward the frontiers of obesity research, aiming to infrom more effective, patient-centered treatment strategies and contribute significantly to the global body of knowledge in metabolic bariatric surgery and obesity research.
